Your First Visit to Tualatin Valley Physical Therapy: What to Expect
Starting physical therapy can feel like a big step, but at Tualatin Valley Physical Therapy, we’re here to make it smooth, informative, and empowering. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, managing chronic pain, or trying to regain function after surgery, your first visit sets the tone for your recovery journey.
Here’s what you can expect when you come in for your initial appointment:
📝 Before You Arrive
To make the most of your visit, we’ll ask you to complete some digital intake paperwork ahead of time. There are some additional forms to fill out in-office before your first appointment. We ask that you please arrive 15 minutes early to fill it out in person. This ensures we have everything we need to start your care plan on the right foot.
👋 When You Walk In
Once you check in, we’ll confirm your paperwork and make sure all required documents are in order. From there, your one-on-one evaluation with your Doctor of Physical Therapy begins—no handoffs to aides or techs, just focused, personalized care.
🧠 Your Initial Evaluation
Your therapist will start by discussing your medical history and the background of your current condition or injury. This conversation helps us understand how the issue developed and what factors may be contributing to your symptoms.
Then we’ll move into a comprehensive physical examination. This includes:
Based on our findings, we’ll provide you with a clear explanation of your condition, how it affects your body, and what we can do to help. You’ll leave your first visit with a clear plan of care, including treatment frequency, expected duration, and specific goals.
🏠 Home Exercise Program Included
You’ll also receive a personalized home exercise program, tailored to your condition and designed to complement your in-clinic therapy. To support your recovery at home, we provide resistance bands at no extra cost. Our goal is to empower you with the tools and knowledge you need to take control of your progress from day one.
📄 What to Bring
To keep things moving smoothly, please bring:
👟 What to Wear
Athletic attire is ideal but not required. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being treated. For example, if you’re coming in for a shoulder issue, a sleeveless shirt works well. If it’s a lower-body concern, shorts or pants that can be rolled up are helpful (we suggest avoiding jeans). Don’t worry, we have gowns and shorts available if needed.
🙌 We're Here for You
At Tualatin Valley Physical Therapy, we do things differently. You’ll spend your full session with your doctor (not passed off to aides) so you receive the expert care you deserve. From day one, you’ll feel informed, involved, and supported every step of the way.
